Toronto AD WEEK 2010 - It's Brave New Year and Decade Ahea
AdWeek Toronto will kick-off Monday January 25th in the morning with a Launch Breakfast Panel Discussion Moderated by Terry O’Reilly and sponsored by Canwest, with content assistance from the Canadian Advertising Museum. This is a by invitation only breakfast event will celebrate the opening of the second Advertising Week in Canada. It will be attended by 250 - 300 client and agency leaders, sponsor CEOs, academic thought leaders, government officials and the media.
It's just one of many events scheduled for the January 25 to January 29 for AdWeek 2010 that will be held in various venues around Toronto.
There are two significant events geared towards young "AdLanders", Next Generation Day. Following a tremendously successful inaugural year, Advertising Week’s Next Generation Day is back, bigger and better than before! Student teams will start the day with an exclusive screening of Art & Copy at the ROM, including breakfast, before being whisked away to experience ‘A Day in the Life’ at one of 20 agencies for the unique opportunity to work with some of the best and brightest in the business. Students will come up with a "BIG IDEA" for Your Life Counts (YLC) that will be judged by industry experts. The winning team will be announced at the Next Generation party that night and has the chance to win some incredible prizes including the possibility of having their work produced.
The other great event for all future "AdLAnders" is the screening of Art&Copy. the film reveals the stories behind and the personal odysseys of some of the most influential advertising visionaries of our time and their campaigns, including Lee Clow (Apple Computer 1984, and today’s iPod); Dan Wieden (“Just Do It”); Phyllis K. Robinson (who invented the “me generation” with Clairol); Hal Riney (who helped President Reagan get re-elected); and George Lois (who saved MTV and launched Tommy Hilfiger overnight). Directed by Doug Pray (HYPE! and Scratch), Art&Copy captures the creative energy and passion behind the iconic campaigns that have had a profound impact on American culture.
Other highlights include Wednesday's presentation of the Speaker Series sponsored by MDC Partners titled Creativity in the New Age. Speakers include Brandon Berger - Vice President, Digital Innovation, MDC Partners Ryan Wolman - Creative Director, henderson bas Steven Thibodeau - Chief Digital Officer, Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners. The panel will discuss the new roles of creativity in a fragmented media landscape where the consumer is in control.
Also Thursday, in the evening, the CASSIES will honour deserving marketers and agencies in Canada's award show dedicated to recognizing business effectiveness of advertising.
On Friday, the action returns to the ROM for Google Canada's Jonathan Lister, who will outline the evolution of online video and how it impacts social marketing and communication spaces.
During the entire week, The Radio Marketing Bureau and members of the CHUM radio/CTVglobemedia, Astral Media, Rogers Media, Milestone and MZ Media radio chains will host a social networking happy hour at Lobby Bar from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to help everyone unwind.
Hopee to see you there.

MIA. Nope Just Been Busy... Student Industry Invasion. Chuck Porter. End of the Semester!
There is always the need to update the blog. Keep regular and relevant. I seem to have a busy "period".
So what has kept me from my "updates" and "views"... well my young "AdLanders", the future of the industry... they have been keeping me busy.
Part of my career class this fall required the students to do "informational" interviews with industry personal in the area of their career direction. They invaded almost every agency whether big or small. It is amazing once again how effortless, easy and how quickly the kindness of the industry took to hosting these young "AdLanders".
My thanks is endless to you all that gave your time to answer their questions and lend advice as they get ready. Paying forward is the greatest lesson learned. Many returned noting that they will give back the same way in the future. These informational interviews lay the foundations for further career planning, portfolio building and the internships they will all be seeking in the new year.

This turned out to be another great highlight for the students this semester and was also a great opportunity for Chuck to "dry run" part of his presentation he gave the next day at nextMedia.
Once again, many thanks to CP+B for their continued support of my efforts and the growth of our program as the leader in advertising education in Canada.
Tony Chapman of Capital C wants to know what log you’re bringing to the social media campfire. In other words, if you’re going to be a part of the social media world, do you have a reason to contribute and belong? Complicated questions, but we hold the answers. Paying "attention is the oxygen of marketing". But before you get anyone's attention, you need to move from shouting loud to listening generously. He noted "be as transparent and honest as possible, because if you’re not, you will be found out".
I had the pleasure of adding some "new thinking" that will be taken back to my lectures courtesy of Tara Hunt, author of The Whuffie Factor who presented that instead of having a personal brand, you develop a "personality". Dare to be imperfect, admit your mistakes, expose your passions, challenge yourself to try something new when you start to feel pidgeon-holed or stagnant, and most importantly, read, listen and open your mind to people who think different than you. She added, "Instead of having a message, have a purpose, and know the difference between the two". Believe me when I say Tara is a brilliant and fresh new thinker... and her boots, total fashionista. Her full presentation is available here.
A great day. Gotta add a personal note, one of my alumni the very talented Lava Nosenkis of Cundari Toronto and her own blog AdGirlandTechNerd introduced me to another amazing lady Trina Boos who created an amazing advertising web community called AdLounge. Had dinner with these two amazing ladies, and clearly the future is very bright.
That's it for now. Back to marking of personal branding/marketing plans, final assignments and portfolios.

Growing Agency in Tough Times – Not Here
As grim economic news and soaring unemployment numbers dominate the headlines, here is a feel good story – Adrenalina.
A full service Hispanic advertising and communication shop.
Like the Spanish word for adrenaline, which is a hormone generated in the human body when we experience emotions, the New York-based Adrenalina creates ideas that provoke engagement, experience and emotion between brands and consumers. The agency specializes in media agnostic ideas, breakthrough advertising, retail and event marketing, consumer promotions and digital innovation. Adrenalina is part of the MDC Partners network, is embarking on an ambitious plan to stimulate the marketplace by pumping up its branding and creative services and bulking up its staff.
The agency's growth spurt is expected to create as many as 12 new jobs in key creative and branding posts throughout 2009 with several principal appointments expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
With the projected population shift among U.S. Hispanics, breakthrough strategies offering relevant cultural ideas will be key to reaching savvy, Latino consumers who are part of a $1 trillion marketplace. In anticipation of the 2010 Census, Adrenalina is drafting the plans for a different kind of agency that guides businesses and brands, not just servicing them. Leading and shape the agency's creative and strategic vision: "engagement, experience and emotion," are industry veterans Ivan Sanchez, who will serve as vice president, senior brand strategist and Victor Zeiris, who joins as creative director.
Gone are the days of a simple "adapt" to fit a ethnic market. These often looked like a really bad Kung-Fu movie.
Keep watching the growth of Hispanic agencies in the US, closer to home, here's a few places that are meeting the needs of "speciality" audiences. Had great chat with a former student of mine Vab Sethi who is in the upstart stages of a "ethno-sentric" media services company. I wish him well.
